Swellendam at a glance

A brief history of the area 

Swellendam is the fifth oldest town in South Africa. With a small population of just over 17 000 people, the town has a close-knit farming community that takes pride in its heritage. Over 50 heritage sites dot the area with a meaningful story to be told behind each one. The architecture of the residential homes and buildings is one of the highlights of the town, styled in a vintage Cape Dutch manner.

Climate 

Swellendam has wonderful weather for those who prefer the outdoors. The summer months are warm and dry while winters are cool and temperate. Highs typically reach around 28°c while lows reach 11°c. The conditions are ideal for gardening, farming and playing sports. 

Schools in the area 

There are educational institutions in the area to service the children of the many families in the area. Most prevalent are; Swellendam High School, Laerskool Swellendam, Olyfrkrans College and Swellendam Secondary School. 

Healthcare in the area 

Swellendam Hospital offers both out-patient and in-patient facilities as well as a clinic on-site with a dispensary. It is open 24 hours for emergencies. Hermanus Provincial Hospital is in the nearby town and hosts specialists and more for all your health concerns. 

Oakhurst Animal Clinic and Vetstop and Swellendam Diere-Hospital are premium veterinary clinics in the area for your beloved animals and pets. 

Shopping centres

From on-the-go pastries to fine dining, Swellendam has them all.  La Belle Alliance is a firm favourite amongst locals and the perfect place to enjoy a family meal. The Republic of Swellendam Restaurant is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am-11 pm. The restaurant serves up South African dishes and international favourites. Expect to indulge in hearty stews for those winter days or juicy burgers and Italian-style pizzas. All meals are prepared with the freshest of locally sourced ingredients and quality produce is guaranteed. 

Special attractions 

Marloth Nature Reserve is hidden in the Swellendam mountains. It conserves vegetation of mountain fynbos, forestry and numerous species of indigenous flowers. If you're hunting for snow during the winter months, the ice-white capped mountains are a treat. There are hiking trails available around the reserve and visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the natural beauty on offer by leaving the 4x4 behind in favour of mountain biking.
