Stilbaai has a rich history, going back as far as 75 000 years. Artefacts from the Middle Stone Age were found in the Blombos Cave near Jongensfontein. The town was officially established in 1894 and remained primarily a holiday destination. Today, the area (including nearby Jongensfontein and Melkhoutfontein) has a permanent population of 7000.
