Sandton at a glance

Known to some as the 'Richest Square Mile in Africa' to some as the 'Manhattan of Africa' and to others simply as 'home', Sandton is an affluent area in Johannesburg that has some of the best commercial, retail and residential spaces in South Africa.

Originally comprised of 3 farms (Zandfontein, Driefontein and Rietfontein), with the farms Witkoppen and Cyferfontein added to the group of farms that was to become the Sandton area, the first known residents were the Esterhuysen family, in the 19 th Century! But really, it was in the 1960s and 1970s that Sandton became what it is today. It was registered as a municipality in the late 60s and supposedly took its name from a combination of the Bryanston and Sandhurst suburb names.

Well known shopping mecca Sandton City was built in the early 1970s, and in the 1990s and 2000s many large corporate offices relocated to Sandton, mostly from the Johannesburg inner city which was unfortunately experiencing rapid urban decay. The Gautrain station is located centrally in Sandton, which makes commuting to workplaces in Sandton from outlying areas easier than traditional self-drive options.

Smaller, but equally impressive shopping centres can be found within the Sandton boundaries - Melrose Arch, Nicolway, Nelson Mandela Square, to name but a few.

Plenty of upmarket hotels, restaurants, spas and sporting facility are in Sandton too, and can be accessed through a multitude of public transport options (busses, taxis, ride shares).

Some 250 000 people call Sandton 'home'. Most residents of Sandton own their homes, but it has long since been an investment hot spot for property investors in the buy-to-let market. Both local and foreign tenants look to rent in Sandton. If considering buying property in the greater Sandton area, absolutely everything is on offer! From 1 bedroom apartments below R800 000 to super-homes at R150 million, there is quite literally a home for everyone, in every size and every taste.

Sandton is, and will remain an aspirational set of suburbs, encompassing people from all walks of live. It truly is an eclectic mix of people, properties and possibilities.
