In 1923, Riviersonderend was founded after Edith S V McIntyre sold her farm, Tierhoek, to the Dutch Reformed church council for 6000 pounds. Originally known as "Rivier Zonder End," which means "river without end" in Dutch, the village later adopted the name "Riviersonderend '' in Afrikaans. This name change has since become a part of the town's history and is still used to this day.
