Riebeek Valley at a glance

The Riebeek Valley is highlighted by the powerful presence of the Kasteelberg, a 946m high solitary mountain of Table Mountain sandstone.  Nestled against the side and foot of the mountain lie the two small towns of Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West, 104 kms north east of Cape Town on the R311.

The towns overlook the Riebeek Valley to the mountain ranges rising in a semicircle from the valley floor.  Some of these ranges are frequently snow capped in the winter.

The hot dry summers and cool, wet winters have led to the development of vineyards, olive groves and fruit orchards intermingled with extensive winter wheat fields that add to the Tuscan / Southern France appearance of the area.

The Riebeek Valley is mentioned in historic records as early as 1685 in despatches of Simon van der Stel.  Some of the first farmers where Huguenots, joined later by others in the 1730's and 1740's.  Over the years Riebeek Kasteel became inhabited by wagon makers and other artisans while retired farmers settled in Riebeek West. The valley was the birthplace of Jan Smuts and his childhood home remains a museum open to the public.

The Riebeek Valley trademark is its fine wines and superior olive products.  Many excellent chefs, artists and craftsmen have moved to the valley in recent years.  Regular events take place throughout the year such as the Olive Festival in May, the PPC Marathon in August and the Shiraz and Art Festival in September.  Residents and visitors are able to enjoy hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, and horse riding or simply enjoy the peace the valley has to offer.

Due to the influx of people to the valley experienced in the past few years, undeveloped farm land has been opened up for potential development of new housing and many large erven have been subdivided into more manageable plots.  Older, character houses may be found waiting for the right make over.  A number of local builders offer favourable building opportunities and architects and interior decorators have made the valley their home.
