Boskruin at a glance

Boskruin is situated in the greater Randburg area, north-west of Johannesburg, near the M5 route that leads to Honeydew. The attractive upmarket suburb is well planned and forms part of Johannesburg’s man-made forest, the largest in the world. The area is dominated by the Boskruin koppie, which lies at the northern end of South Africa's highveld plateau at an altitude of 1,500 metres above sea level.

The picturesque outcrop of ancient granite and its immediate surrounds form the Boschkop Nature Reserve that runs north from the dip in Ysterhout Drive. It is part of the ‘Johannesburg Dome’ that lies under rocks that once covered the whole region over 3,000 million years ago.

The Boskruin koppie, a protected reserve, enjoys a rich biodiversity and has many indigenous trees and a prolific birdlife. The koppie and its immediate surroundings are one of the few remaining “green lungs” left in the northern part of Johannesburg and the area is home to a diverse range of small animals including tortoises, guinea fowl, hedgehogs, dassies and owls.

Boskruin residential properties alongside the reserve are highly sought after and are amongst the most beautiful homes in Randburg.

Boskruin is primarily a residential area, with a few commercial nodes along the major routes that service the area. Boskruin affords easy access to the N1, Beyers Naudé Drive, Witkoppen Road and other major arterial routes. The suburb enjoys the best of all worlds – it is close enough to the Randburg CBD, the Johannesburg city centre and Sandton to make it popular among commuters, but also close enough to the Magaliesburg countryside and Hartebeespoort Dam to ensure a relaxed ‘away from the city’ atmosphere.

The area in which Boskruin is situated dates back to 1860. The original farmhouse, the nearby ‘Hy Many House’ in Frangipani Crescent, Randpark Ridge, is believed to be the oldest brick structure in Johannesburg.

In 1903 the farmhouse and farm Boschkop (Bush Hill) belonged to a J Labuschagne. John Dale Lace, a Randlord, bought a portion of the farm Boschkop in 1903. Kelly Road, which intersects the suburb of Boskruin, is named after Tom Kelly, a businessman of Irish descent who purchased a large quantity of land from Dale Lace in the Boschkop area in 1927. Kelly’s farm consisted of 1,300 acres, with 25 acres of vegetable gardens. Kelly’s land formed the basis of what is Boskruin today.

In the 1940s and 50s, the Moon Hotel in Kelly Avenue was a popular venue for a Sunday outing ‘in the country’. The hotel later became known as the White Horse Inn, popular through the 60s, 70s and 80s for weddings, functions and dance clubs. Today the building houses the Crescent Clinic, opposite the Boskruin Village Shopping Centre.

This conveniently situated suburb has experienced considerable growth in the last 20 years and Boskruin now has a community centre and library as well as a wide array of excellent retail and other facilities.
