A brief history of the area

Paarl gets its name from a massive granite outcrop on the top of Paarl Mountain. The town was founded in 1687 and is South Africa's third-oldest community. In 1687, 23 families from Stellenbosch settled in the Paarl Valley. In 1690, a settlement known as Drakenstein was constructed at the foot of Paarl Rock and called Paarl, which means "a pearl" in Dutch. The granite rocks inspired the name.

In 1797, John Barrow described Paarl as a community with thirty buildings along a roadway with orchards, gardens, and vineyards. The Khoisan, Dutch Settlers, French Huguenots, Jewish immigrants, Italian Prisoners of War, and Xhosa migrant labourers have left a rich cultural and historical legacy.
