History and development

Century City was founded in the 1990s on land that was once a wetlands and estuary. The development was planned as a mixed-use property, and today it is home to a variety of businesses, schools, and restaurants.

The first phase of the development was the Ratanga Junction theme park, which opened in 1998. The park closed in 2018 and has since been redeveloped into Ratanga Park, a recreational park with a variety of activities for all ages.

The second phase of the development was the Canal Walk shopping centre, which opened in 2000. Canal Walk is the largest shopping mall in Africa and the Southern Hemisphere, with over 1,000 stores and restaurants.
