Middelburg Central at a glance
Middelburg is known as the "Stainless Steel Capital of Africa". Middelburg has today outgrown all expectations to become a large farming and industrial centre, with a growth rate equal to the best in the country. Middelburg was established as Nasareth, (root from dry land), in 1864 by the Voortrekkers on the banks of the Klein Olifants River. The name was changed in 1872 to Middelburg to mark its situation midway between the two towns of Pretoria and Lydenburg.
The town offers one of the largest police forces in the region, a public hospital and clinic, as well as a private hospital (Midmed Hospital), nursery schools, the best schools in Mpumalanga and various College covering all areas and languages. Middelburg is situated an hour and a half from OR Tambo International Airport and conveniently close to one of the main routes to the Kruger National Park. Middelburg has its share of places of historical interest (Botshabelo), over night accommodation and family restaurants to entertain locals and visiting tourists. The Loskop Dam Area is rich in artists, crafts people and cultural activities and boasts a diverse history.
Unique to the region are the traditional Ndebele homesteads, gaily painted in bright, bold geometric designs which have become the signature of the southern Ndebele people who inhabit this part of the Highveld.
