A brief history of the area

Vanwyksdorp was founded in 1838 on land that was formerly a farm called Buffelsfontein. The owner of this farm was Gerrit van Wyk, and Vanwyksdorp was named in his honour.

February and March are the hottest months of the year in Vanwyksdorp, and during this period, it is not uncommon to see the mercury rising into the mid to high 30s. During the winter months of June to August, the temperature is likely to reach a maximum of 20°C on an average day.

Residents of Vanwyksdorp can visit the Vanwyksdorp Satellite Clinic between 7.30am and 4.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The nearest hospital is the Alan Blyth Hospital in Ladismith.

The closest airport to Vanwyksdorp is George Airport, which is approximately 150km away. This drive will take you just over two hours in average traffic. George's CBD is about 160km from Vanwyksdorp, while Cape Town is 345km away, which amounts to a four-hour drive.

Despite its small-town status, Vanwyksdorp has a number of great restaurants, and a visit to the area is a treat for the taste buds! Spekboom Restaurant is a great choice for breakfast or lunch, offering a wholesome menu and generous portions. Visitors regularly comment about the spectacular service they enjoy here.

The Melkstal offers delicious take aways such as spare ribs, chicken kebabs, steaks and pizzas with home-made bases.

Rooiberg Lodge offers another great dining experience. Visitors have the chance to sample delectable South African cuisine, which is paired with wines from local Western Cape wineries.
