Brixton at a glance

Brixton named after the suburb in London, is one of Johannesburg's older suburbs and was initially recommended as a grazing area for the cattle of Johannesburg! However, in January 1903, 500 stands on what was known as the "Brixton Estate" were put up for sale. Advertised as "charming view sites" they sold quickly and became the basis of the residential suburb of Brixton.

Brixton Cemetery was laid out in 1912 and is famous as the final resting place of many important early residents of Johannesburg such as randlords, engineers, soldiers, professors, geologists, architects, prospectors and miners. The Brixton cemetery has an old world feel to it with elegant headstones and gracious oak, pine and blue gum trees. City Parks has recently undertaken a process of restoration to preserve or restore some of the older headstones. The Brixton cemetery also has an historic Hindu crematorium on land organised by Mahatma Gandhi shortly before he left South Africa in 1914 as well as a current crematorium for Hindus.

Today, Brixton is a developed suburb with a reasonably good infrastructure. A sense of community pervades the area and homeowners and residents enjoy the history, convenience and ambience of their suburb, which is situated close to central Johannesburg and all amenities.

Famous landmarks in the Brixton area include the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and the famous Brixton Tower on the hill, which rises above the bordering suburbs of Westdene, Auckland Park and Triomf.

Brixton property is an excellent investment as is becoming increasingly popular with students and academics from the nearby University of Johannesburg (UJ) who wish to live in a suburban environment close to the university. Young families also find this a convenient location as the local schools are all within walking distance.

Brixton offers a diverse range of residential property and Seeff Properties Randburg can assist you with all types of Brixton residential property for sale or rental in this popular area including houses and freehold or sectional title apartments, semis and guesthouses.
