Tsitsikamma at a glance

Tsitsikamma is situated within the Garden Route National Park along a spectacular stretch of coast, bounded by the Bloukrans River to the west, the Eerste River to the east, fronted by the warm Indian Ocean, and a lovely backdrop formed by the Tsitsikamma Mountains.

Tsitsikamma was so called by the Khoi San people, meaning ‘Place of Many Waters’. The name is apt for here are river gorges cutting deep into the coastline, forming kloofs and waterfalls between large tracts of indigenous forest and fynbos.

For lovers of nature Tsitsikamma is ideal: sea and forest birds are prolific, as is the fauna which includes antelope, mongoose, wild cat, caracal, badger and the shy Cape clawless otter. The famous Otter and Tsitsikamma hiking trails are contained within this park, as are numerous other beautiful walks.

Storms River village is the lively hub of this area offering some shops, pub and restaurant, but the main business of the village is the multitude of adventure activities which have their base here. Sea kayaking is a favourite activity, starting in the ocean then paddling up river to deep caves and tranquil pools where you can just float and relax on lilos. There are also canopy tours, snorkelling, scuba diving and boat cruises.

The distance from Storms River village to Plettenberg Bay is 68km going west, while Port Elizabeth is 222km travelling east along the N2.
