Sandbaai at a glance

Sandbaai, pronounced 'Sandbay', is a small seaside suburb that is located on the south coast of the Western Cape province in South Africa. Sandbaai is one of the newer suburbs in the Greater Hermanus area and lies in a little sandy bay, hence its name. The area is a stone's throw away from Hermanus and boasts beautiful ocean views and mountainous surroundings.

A brief history of the area

As Sandbaai is a relatively new suburb, there isn't really any history to tell. It is so close to Hermanus though that it's practically part of it and Hermanus was founded in the early 1800s.

A man called Hermanus Pieters happened upon the area when searching for better grazing for his livestock. The freshwater spring and excellent grazing pastures convinced him to stay and soon other farmers and fishermen followed suit to the plentiful area. The natural beauty and bountiful oceans of the area soon spread and by the 1890s the town had two schools, two churches, various shops and a thriving fishing industry.
