A brief history of the area

You'll find history at every turn. Harare was previously named Fort Salisbury after the then British Prime Minister. When Zimbabwe gained its independence in 1982, the city was renamed Harare. The new name honours Chief Neharawa, a Shona chief. Despite Zimbabwe's economic and political challenges, Harare has become the country's leading city. It exports gold, maize, cotton, tobacco, citrus fruits, textiles and steel.

Climate

Harare has a warm and temperate climate. The average annual temperature is 18.4 °C. You'll find this quite mild for the tropics. The city's high altitude and cool south-easterly airflow will give you a welcome relief from the heat. The average annual rainfall is about 825 to 855 mm, depending on the part of the city you're in.

Education is a great priority in Zimbabwe. You'll find this attention reflected in the well-regarded schools and tertiary institutions in the city. 

Primary schools include Lusitania Primary School, Hellenic Primary School and Westridge Primary School.

For tertiary education, look to the University of Zimbabwe, Harare Institute of Technology, the Catholic University of Zimbabwe or the Women's University in Africa

Harareans are fortunate to have an international airport located within the city. The driving distance from Harare to Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport is only 15,2 km. This will take you roughly 24 minutes to reach your destination.
