Before European settlers arrived in the late 1700s, the land was home to the Khoekhoen tribes, namely the Gouriquas, Attequas, and Outeniquas. The region bears witness to this rich heritage, as evidenced by names like the Outeniqua Mountains, derived from the Khoekhoen's designation for these majestic peaks.

In 1811, George was officially established as an independent district, with Adrian van Kervel assuming the role of the inaugural Landrost (magistrate). The town's proclamation took place on St George's Day, the 23rd of April, 1811, under the authority of the Earl of Caledon, who served as the governor of the Cape Colony. In honour of the ruling British monarch at the time, King George III, the town was christened "George."
