In 1903, Edenvale was a small post-Anglo Boer War farm named Rietfontein. The area was established as a gold mine and named after the then Rietfontein Gold Mine. Edenvale draws its name from John Eden, a part-owner of Rietfontein. In 1939, Edenvale became a village. It was later proclaimed a municipality in 1954. It's likely the suburb of Eden Glen was inspired by the town name.
