A brief history of the area

Musgrave was named after Sir Anthony Musgrave, who was a colonial administrator and briefly the governor of the South African colony of Natal. Sir Musgrave lived from 31 August 1828 until 9 October 1888.

Musgrave Centre in its original form was the first suburban shopping centre in Durban and was constructed in the late 1950s.

Musgrave residents looking to reach King Shaka International Airport can do so in approximately 32 minutes (34,1 km) via the M4 and N2. Durban Beach is only 11 minutes (5,6 km) away via Currie Road,

Residents of Musgrave will find February to be the warmest month of the year with an average high temperature of 26.6°C and the coldest month of the year is July with an average high temperature of 21.2°C. The wettest month is December with the area seeing roughly 22 days of rain with precipitation reaching 78mm.

Schools in the area

Musgrave has some excellent schools for you to enrol your kids into. Some of the top pre-primary and primary schools in and around the area include Joyce Broadhead Pre-Primary School, Tree Tops (Pre-Primary and Junior Primary), Berea Primary School, and Hartley Road Primary School. These schools each offer a great curriculum, excellent co-curricular activities, and a nurturing environment to give your children a flying start in life. 

Nearby high schools you should consider are Ridge Park College, Durban High School, Islamic Orient School and the premier girls schools, Maris Stella, which was opened in 1899 and Durban Girls College.

Musgrave is also home to some of the best tertiary colleges in KwaZulu-Natal such as NewBridge College, Durban University of Technology and STADIO School of Education. This has made the area sought after by students and a great investment for buy-to-let investors targeting the highly lucrative student accommodation market. 

Healthcare in the area

When choosing an area to live in, you want to know where the best hospitals and healthcare providers are. It is a key part of the decision-making process. Thankfully, Musgrave is only a seven-minute drive away from Netcare Parklands Hospital and only a six-minute drive away from Netcare St Augustine's Hospital and McCord Hospital.

For all your day-to-day needs, you could visit Medical Centre @ 73 Musgrave Road or take a short drive to Overport Medical Clinic. There are also a few general practitioners in the area that can attend to your medical needs.

If your furry loved ones are in need of medical attention, you could take them to Durban Veterinary Clinic.

Musgrave is home to the acclaimed Musgrave Centre which has over 120 stores, a food court and a cinema.
