Essenwood at a glance

Essenwood is a suburb on Durban's Berea that sits nestled between the suburbs of Musgrave and Morningside overlooking Greyville Race Course and Royal Durban Golf Club and arguably offers some of the best views in Durban. The Royal Durban Golf Club was first established in 1892 as the Durban Golf Club in the middle of the Greyville racecourse. In 1932 the Durban Golf Club was rebuilt and a new club house replaced the original wood and iron shanty. Greyville Racecourse is home of the infamous Durban July and the Gold Cup.  The thoroughbred horse racetrack held its first meeting in July 1844 and the Durban July was first held in 1897 with seven horses competing.

Essenwood is a very desirable suburb with beautiful properties, many which still boast Victorian architecture and are utilised by both commercial and residential sectors.  A growing number of these older homes are being transformed into modern masterpieces by those who prefer a more contemporary look. The area is also home to a large number of apartment blocks that display various architectural styles, including some of the best examples of Art Deco buildings in Durban. The sectional title market dominates the Essenwood suburb but the freestanding homes achieve an above average price in the Durban property market.

The shopping in Essenwood is great with Musgrave Centre on your doorstep and Cowey Park Centre located in the heart of Essenwood.  This suburb hosts one of Durban's iconic markets, the Essenwood Park every Saturday morning.  Add a choice of fabulous restaurants, easy access, good schools and you have the perfect place to live. The exclusive private girls schools, Durban Girls College and Maris Stella are both located in the heart of Essenwood.  Essenwood is located between Springfield Road in the north and John Zikhali Road in the south.

Medical Facilities

Parklands Hospital is located in the heart of Essenwood in Hopelands Road and is one of the premier health care facilities in Durban. This well known establishment has been in existence for 65 years when it was previously known as Parklands Nursing Home. The establishment of doctors rooms, laboratories, specialist radiology and ancillary medical related services has made this a central hub for all medical services.

A brief history of the area
The term 'Moving House' has a new meaning when you talk about 638 Essenwood Road.  This historic home was built in 1907 for Mrs F C Harwin and in order to make development of this 6,000m2 site possible this historic home had to be moved. Demolition of this grand home drew opposition from the historically minded public and the relevant authorities. The stately house was moved off its foundations in which it stood fro 83 years a full 15 meters to the new site.  In essence this double story home was disconnected from its foundations and basements and slid 15 meters on concrete rails to make way for the new townhouse development.  Today the townhouse sectional title complex called Royal Palms occupies the land where the original house stood.

There are numerous wonderful Art Deco style apartment buildings in the heart of Essenwood.  The iconic, conservation award winning, Surrey Mansions in Currie Road and Cheviot Court in Musgrave Road have been beautifully maintained and renovated.

Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)
The distance from Essenwood to King Shaka International Airport is 34km. This trip will take you roughly 30 minutes in average traffic. Durban's CBD is a mere 3km from Essenwood - a drive that will take approximately 8 minutes when conditions are good.
