A brief history of the area

Ceres derives its name from the Roman goddess of fruitfulness. Its inception can be traced back to the 18th century when European colonists began expanding stock farming. Grazing licenses were issued and cattle posts were established, giving rise to a rapidly advancing stock farming frontier. Eventually, these regions were permanently settled through the loan farm system and later the perpetual quitrent system, replacing the previously sparsely populated areas.

As frontier conditions evolved with permanent settlements, various towns emerged to cater to the needs of the surrounding farmers. Among them, Ceres took shape and subsequently, Prins Alfred's Hamlet, Baliesgat, Wolseley, Op die Berg and other small towns were established in the district.
