Cornwall Hill at a glance

The Estate offers a feeling of tranquility and privacy, enhanced further by the beauty and landscaping of the natural surroundings. The homeowner is offered the choice of living on a 1 ha stand, 4000m² or 1000m² stands. Homes built must adhere to architectural guidelines to ensure that the balance and character of the Estate is maintained. Property owners automatically become members of the Homeowners Association.

Cornwall Hill Country Estate is carefully carved out of 318 hectares of Irene History. Irene was the name given in 1889 to the 1,125 ha farm by its owner, AH Nellmapius. Within a year he had trebled the size of the farm and named it Irene Estate. In 1902, JA van der Byl, then part owner of the Estate created the Irene village near the heart of the farm. In 1900 the British troops occupied Pretoria and over a thousand mounted infantry plus two companies of the 2nd Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry and 350 Northumberland Fusiliers (The Black Watch) guarded the railway line at Irene. Defenses were constructed to the west of the railway bridge, on Aloe Koppie and on the Lime Works Hill, but most importantly a fort was built on the highest hill in the vicinity by the Cornishmen with rough stone without the use of mortar and thus the hill became known as Cornwall Hill. Some trenches of stone marking the communication routes can still be found on high ground and ridges. The construction of the Memorial, which still remains a focal point of the development, was completed in 1946. Residents are able to enjoy a picnic and some of the most stunning views and magnificent sunsets at the memorial. The Estate was proclaimed in 1998 and developed by Kroon & Sons and EG Chapman.

Driving through the new security entrance, greeted by friendly efficient guards, you immediately allow yourself the feeling of peaceful and relaxed living. At Cornwall Hill you are provided with 24 hour security, enhanced by a new perimeter wall, electric fencing and fingerprint access control, letting you leave the hustle and bustle of the city far behind.

The experience of living in Cornwall Hill is further enriched by the Estate having its own Private School, Cornwall Hill College. Property in Cornwall Hill is sought after because of the college. The College is one of the Top Pretoria schools and caters for children from Grade 000 to Grade 12, and prides itself on offering a high standard of education in all spheres namely academic, sporting, cultural and social outreach. The school has approximately 1700 learners and a boarding facility for 64 boys from Grade 7 to Grade 12. As you drive through the Estate you will be able to catch a glimpse of children strolling or riding their bicycles home after a day at school without having to leave the boundaries of the Estate and your child will be afforded the opportunity of a solid education on your doorstep.

Children and horses have right of way. Horses may be kept on the 1 ha stands with many of the homeowners having built stables on their properties. Lands end, a popular picnic spot on the river, within the Estate, has braais and a play area for residents to enjoy. Also along the river is a mountain bike trail. Many residents take advantage of this safe route to train or just enjoy the scenery. Another popular meeting spot for residents is the children’s play park situated in the middle of the Estate. Most afternoons you will see Moms with prams having a chat while their little ones play safely. The park is also the venue for the Homeowners Association children’s Christmas Party, where each child is given a party pack and encouraged to donate toys and stationery for the less fortunate.

Locality is perfect. Cornwall Hill is only twenty minutes from OR Thambo International Airport, and easy access is offered to Johannesburg, Midrand and Pretoria. Cornwall Hill is within reach of all major shopping areas, the new Irene Village Mall being only 5 km from the Estate. The quaint mall offers fantastic restaurants, cinemas, boutiques and most of the major fashion outlets as well as a Pick ‘n Pay Supermarket and a Woolworths Store. The newly built Southdown’s Mall is also only 7km away. At the entrance to the Estate is the Plantpark nursery as well as the Cornish Kettle, a small restaurant.

Almost all the building is completed on the Estate, so Cornwall Hill property is very scarce. However there are a few vacant stands still available, expect to pay between R1 million and R 2 million. Houses range from early R2 million on a 1,000m² stand and from R4 million to R 28 million on a 1 ha stand. (2012)
