Centurion at a glance

The town of Centurion, formerly known as Verwoerdburg, is situated in Gauteng between the cities of Midrand and Pretoria. A brief history of the area

Evidence from the Sterkfontein Caves suggests that this area has a long history dating back to prehistoric times. Hominids may have lived close to Centurion, emphasising the area's lasting appeal. Centurion has its roots in Lyttelton Township, which was established in 1904 on the estate Droogegrond. By uniting the areas of Doornkloof, Irene, and Lyttelton, it was given its City Council status in 1964 and given the name Lyttelton. Lyttelton was later renamed Verwoerdburg in 1967. Verwoerdburg eventually changed its name to Centurion, a name it has maintained to today

If you are a Centurion resident and are travelling to O.R. Tambo International Airport, your trip will take you around 43 minutes, covering a distance of approximately 60 km. The Wonderboom Airport, which is located around 40 kilometres north of Pretoria, is the closest airport to Centurion. Centurion is located just under 58 km from the CBD of Johannesburg and a little over 23 km from Pretoria, respectively.

Climate 

The climate in Centurion is comparatively temperate, with dry, short and cold winters and sunny summer days that frequently conclude in afternoon showers. The climate in the Highveld is pleasant year-round thanks to this weather. The hottest months of the year are December and January. January, the hottest month, has a high average temperature of 28.1 and an average low temperature of 17.1. The coldest month is July, which is an enjoyable winter month, with an average high temperature of 18.5°C and an average low temperature of 6.8°C.
