A brief history of the area

Rondebosch's origins can be traced to the early years of the Cape Colony. After the Dutch settlement at the Cape in 1652, experimental crops were grown along the Liesbeek River. In October 1656, Jan van Riebeeck visited Rondeboschyn, later named Rondebosch, from "Ronde Doorn Bossien," meaning a circular grove of thorn trees. In 1657, the first Dutch East India Company employees gained "free burgher" (free citizen) status and received land along the river, formalising Rondebosch as a settlement.
