Fresnaye at a glance

Fresnaye is one of Cape Town's most sought-after residential areas. With its stunning panoramic mountain views and close proximity to hotspots like the V& A Waterfront and more, we delve into what sets Fresnaye apart.

A brief history of the area

Originally called "Winterslust", Fresnaye was purchased in the 1800s as an estate measuring just under 1 km squared. The estate belonged to a descendant of the French Huguenots named Ryk Le Sueur, an aristocratic barrister from Bayeux in Normandy.

The estate was home to a farmhouse beset by vineyards and orchards on either side. Hence the nickname "Garden of Eden" stuck. With the large population of French settlers, Fresnaye is home to a number of streets with French names and cultural influences.

Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)

Cape Town International Airport is approximately 41 minutes (23,9 km) from Fresnaye via the N2. Travelling to Cape Town's CBD would take you 14 minutes (5,3 km) via High Level Road and Strand Street.

Climate

Fresnaye has a temperate climate with mild to moderate weather. The summer months are warm and sunny with regular rainfall, but a low level of humidity. The winter months are cool and dry with temperatures ranging between 12°C-18°C.

Schools in the area

Fresnaye has a range of schools that cater to all ages. The Atlantic Seaboard is known for its priority on education and Fresnaye is no different. Parents can select from The Cape Town French School, Huguenot Primary School, Jordan's Fresnaye Play School, MELF Montessori on Kloof and more. To enroll your little ones in a dance studio, The Ballet School is a mere 5 km away in Hout Bay.

Healthcare in the area

Fresnaye is conveniently situated amongst hospitals, clinics and General Practitioners. You can easily access New Somerset Hospital, Medicross City Bowl, Netcare Travel Clinic, Three Anchor Bay Medical Centre and more.

With cosmopolitan living being the norm in Fresnaye, it's only natural the shopping scene would follow suit. You will be spoilt for choice with The Point Mall Shopping Centre, Piazza Du Luz, Artem Centre, Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village and more. The popular V & A Waterfront is also nearby, with an assortment of stores and restaurants.

Restaurants

Fresnaye is located a stone's throw away from some of Cape Town's finest eateries. This includes the classic and well-loved, La Perla. Established in 1959, this restaurant has stood the test of time and many celebrities have dined here. Pop in for a divine bite to eat while overlooking the ocean and keeping an eye out for a familiar face. Dishes consist of fresh seafood and Italian-inspired meals.

Ginger & Lime Food Studio offers a dining experience with a twist. You can book in advance to be part of an assortment of classes teaching you to prepare three-course meals. Choose from a selection of Japanese, French, Mediterranean cuisine and more.

If you're looking for something a little more casual, yet still contemporary, consider Seoul Korean Restaurant. Infused with old-school Korean hospitality, you can enjoy the option of cooking your own food on hot plates or stir up sizzling broths. All the dishes are made to order and bursting with flavour. Expect to try tender chicken in chilli paste and crisp prawn pancakes.
