Claremont Upper at a glance

Upper Claremont lies 9,6 km south of Cape Town’s city centre, between Newlands and Kenilworth and about twenty minutes from the warm waters of the False Bay beaches to the south, and a similar distance from Cape Town International Airport. The former Arderne Gardens, now a superb public park, contains a fine collection of exotic trees planted by H.M. Arderne during the 19th century. Claremont was also the home of the 19th century astronomer, Sir John Herschel, of the Royal Observatory. Claremont became a municipality in1886 and was incorporated into the municipality of Cape Town in 1913. However, it is still wistfully referred to as “The Village” and its rugby team is known as “The Villagers”. Upper Claremont is a well established, select residential area, inhabited in the main by professional and successful business people.

Upper Claremont is very conveniently placed for easy access to the University of Cape Town, and to the top Cape Schools: Sans Souci Girl’s High School, Westerford High school (co-ed), Western Province Preparatory School (Boys, private), Wynberg (boys and girls, primary and secondary), Grove Primary (co-ed), Herschel Girl’s School (private), S.A.C.S. Boys’ School (primary and secondary), Herzlia (boys and girls, primary) and Springfield Convent (girls, primary and secondary).

The fashionable Cavendish Square shopping centre and cinema complex is located in Claremont. Close by is Newlands Cricket Ground, the Western Province Rugby Ground and the Kelvin Grove Country Club. Several private hospitals and a number of top medical practitioners and specialists are located in Claremont, as well as various churches, a Synagogue and a mosque.
