Bergvliet at a glance

Bergvliet lies in the Constantia Valley, flanked by Tokai and Constantia, and is a perfect example of a quiet suburban life style.

The leafy streets are lined with comfortable homes and beautifully established gardens with close proximity to Sweet Valley Primary School, Bergvliet High School, Bergvliet Primary School, as well as to excellent shopping Centres (Meadowridge Park and Shop, as well as Constantia Village Shopping Centre). Bergvliet lies in the shadow of the beautiful Constantiaberg Mountains - a well-loved landmark for all the suburbs that lie nestled here, known collectively as the southern suburbs. Bergvliet was developed in the late ‘40s for the returning war veterans, and is well known for its sturdy homes which translate very well when modernized.

Bergvliet’s main attraction is the quiet and peacefulness the neighbourhood offers and the quick access to the M3, which takes one into the city centre in just 20 minutes and to the beaches of False Bay even more quickly. The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens are minutes away and the Constantia Wine Route is quite literally on Bergvliet’s doorstep. Maynardville Park, in Wynberg, offers an open-air theatre, which in summer is a famous local haunt - synonymous with picnic baskets and blankets. Newlands cricket and rugby stadiums are close by and Rhodes Memorial with its tea garden and gorgeous views provides a perfect outing.

Die Oog Bird Sanctuary and Reserve, located in Bergvliet, is a sanctuary for ducks, herons, kingfishers and a major roosting site for cattle egret, sacred ibis, hadeda ibis and the reed cormorant.

Die Oog Bird Sanctuary is also a wet breeding area for the endangered Western Cape leopard toad. Currently a public space and belonging to the City of Cape Town, it is hoped that Die Oog will be proclaimed a formal Nature Reserve in the near future.

There are many creatures at Die Oog; apart from the birds and leopard toads, the area is also home to terrapins, tortoises and a water mongoose.
