A brief history of the area

Barrydale's fertile lands originally attracted Khoisan and Attaqua populations who called it Kannaland and made their homes in the valleys and mountains. The town sprung to life in the 1700s when European settlers and farmers moved to the area, in search of arable land and freshwater sources. 

One of the early inhabitants, James Barry, was a local acting lawyer, deputy sheriff, tradesman, auctioneer, and a member of the military. With these roles, he left such a great impression, the town was named after him. Today Barrydale has attracted people from all walks of life including farmers, artists, writers, and restauranteers.

Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)

As a Barrydale resident, you can travel roughly two hours and 21 minutes (199 km) to reach George Airport. Alternatively, it will take you about three hours (243 km) to take flights at Cape Town International Airport. Barrydale is also close to other points of interest such as Swellendam (41 minutes, 46.1 km) and Heidelberg (40 minutes, 43.2 km).

Climate

Barrydale's temperate climate makes it a joy for those who love warm weather. You can expect average temperatures to hit the 20s in summer. In winter, average temperatures sit around the low tens. These weather conditions are perfect for growing fruit trees such as apples, pears, oranges, and peaches. You'll see plenty of thriving vineyards, orchards, and gardens in the area. Your child can get a quality education in Barrydale. Schools in the area include B.F. Oosthuizen Primary and Hoërskool Barrydale. The latter is a combination school that educates young minds from Grade R to Grade 12.
