The West Coast lies in the Western Cape along the south-western coast of South Africa and stretches from Blaauwberg and Atlantis in the south to Namaqualand in the north. It also includes the area known as the Sandveld.

What makes the West Coast special?
The West Coast is known for its simplicity, salt-of-the-earth people, natural beauty and unspoilt beaches. The area’s appeal also comes from its wild flowers in spring, nature reserves such as the West Coast National Park, seafood like snoek, mussels and crayfish, rugged Cedarberg Mountains and its wine routes. Towns like Darling, Elands Bay, Lamberts Bay, Paternoster and St Helena Bay have become well-loved destinations.

Climate
The West Coast enjoys a moderate climate due to the cold Benguela ocean current which plays an important role in the ecology of the region. The West Coast enjoys hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters.

Agriculture on the West Coast
The West Coast is host to a wide range of farming activities which include the cultivation of wheat, potatoes, lucerne, fruit, vegetables and Rooibos tea as well as sheep, cattle and ostrich farming and even viticulture and winemaking.

The Sandveld has plenty of water, which makes it ideal for irrigation farming. This area is also known for its high-quality potatoes growing in white sand. The source of the perennial Berg River is the high-rainfall mountains of Franschhoek. The river flows into the Atlantic Ocean near Velddrif.

The first farms in the Sandveld District were granted in the early 1700s. As a result, no land claims have been lodged on farms on the West Coast.
