The Berg River area comprises Velddrif, Laaiplek, Noordhoek, Port Owen and Dwarskersbos, situated less than two hours north of Cape Town on the Cape West Coast. This area is heaven to bird-watchers, fishermen and sailing enthusiasts. It is here where the meandering Berg River flows into the Atlantic, and also the finish-line of the annual Berg River Canoe Marathon. Port Owen offers a deep-water marina and many of the waterfront properties boast private mooring areas. Bird-watchers can spot no less than 183 species, of which at least 70 are water birds - in Velddrif itself, or at nearby Rocherpan Nature Reserve. Visitors can enjoy abundant veld flowers in spring, whales or lazy walks on miles of sandy beaches.
