Within the confines of Camps Bay, there are some distinct areas, such as The Camps Bay Village, and The Glen.
The central, level area, behind the Bay Hotel and famous rotunda is commonly known by the locals as “the village”. It has a soccer field, tennis, bowls and squash clubs, children’s park, preparatory school, library, yoga centre, hair dressing salon and many churches.
In the days when Camps Bay was a sparsely populated area, it was reached by rail from Cape Town over Kloofnek and the original railway cottages are still in evidence. The Rotunda is a historical building now attached to the Bay Hotel and, in the Forties and Fifties, held many formal dances. It is still a popular venue for conferences, weddings and events. If you lived in Camps Bay in the Fifties, you would have seen a white horse called Philly and his inseparable companion, a white donkey, clip clopping around the village area and beachfront. They had the freedom of the town and cars had to stop for them. There is a plaque in Philly’s honour outside the library. Difficult to imagine on Camps Bay busy beachfront today, a horse and a donkey being ridden and fed by happy children!
