Carnarvon Real Estate- Northern Cape Province
Carnarvon is situated in the middle of the Karoo in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa in the Upper Karoo or Bo Karoo region and is roughly halfway between Calvinia and De Aar on the R63. Being centrally situated, Carnarvon serves as a convenient gateway and stopover before a traveller reaches the famous flowers of the Namakwaland region also known as the painted dessert of South Africa, the West Coast region of South Africa and the Verneukpan, famous for it's land speed record attempts.
With various interesting towns in the area, including Sutherland, home of South Africa's Astronomical Observatory, Fraserburg with it's fossil exhibition and Vanwyksvlei with the first state funded dam to name but a few, with bushmen paintings all throughout the region, Carnarvon is the perfect choice as a base from which to explore the Bo Karoo region.
The village of Carnarvon lies south of the rolling picturesque Kareeberg Mountains and was founded in colonial times on one of the routes followed by the early explorers and traders between the Cape and Botswana. It started as a Renish missionary station first known as Schietfontein, by 1860 as Harmsfontein and by 1874 it was named after Lord Carnarvon, the British Colonial Secretary.
Carnarvon offers quiet and peaceful surroundings, wide-open spaces with lone lazily turning windmills suggesting human presence, clean air, almost no traffic, safety and low crime rates, stunning Karoo landscapes unique to South Africa, an interesting museum, small Nature reserve, tortoise reserve, famous blikkies tin can bar in the hotel with hundreds of beer cans decorating the walls.
It is famous for its corbelled houses built in the area during 1811 to 1815 of stone, including the roofs, and has a rich and varied Karoo architecture with typical dreamy rural cottages and houses. The home of writer poet A G Visser is to be found here and the ever-present imposing church buildings.
The economy is based on agriculture with sheep farming being the main activity. Without any doubt the worlds' tastiest and juiciest mutton and lam is produced here which is a sought after item on any menu in the whole of South Africa.
The climate is dry with hot summers and cold winters with rainfall mainly in the summer months brought by spectacularly beautiful thunderstorms, seen rolling and unfolding toward you from miles distant with a clean crisp smell filling the air.
Proposed developments include the building of a trial radio telescope facility with upgrades to infra structure as a bid for obtaining a worldwide contract to construct a major radio telescope facility with an expected hike in property prices.
Fiercely loved by hardy but friendly inhabitants, the Karoo will grip you and never quite let go of you again whether you invest in property or not.
