In 2002 Pietersburg changed its name to Polokwane which means 'place of safety'. Polokwane offers property and real estate investors a range of property types to choose from. It provides a convenient and attractive stopover for road travellers on their way to and from South Africa's northern neighbours (Botswana and Zimbabwe), and for those heading for the northern parts of the Kruger National Park, which lies to the east. Its Gateway International Airport handles mainly domestic and regional traffic, which is expanding.
Polokwane began life, in a sense, as the troubled little Voortrekker settlement of Schoemansdal in the 1840s, a rather rugged, frontier-type camp for hunters and ivory traders that was attacked and destroyed by the Venda forces of the region. Its residents - there were about 1,800 of them - were then moved 100 kilometres south, and the new town was renamed, in 1886, in honour of Transvaal republican leader Commandant Piet Joubert. The city has all the necessary amenities including good hotels, guest-houses, restaurants and shopping centres.
The Polokwane Game Reserve is close to town, and one of the country's larger city sanctuaries. The reserve is a haven for white rhino, giraffe, zebra, eland, red hartebeest and other antelope, together with a healthy 280 species of bird. Game-viewing trails wind through pleasant countryside.
The nearby Soutpansberg is a lovely range of hills ideal for the hiker, rambler, bird-watcher and lover of quiet forest country. It lies to the north and is easily accessible from Polokwane.
