Swellendam at a Glance:

Situated at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains and located just off the N2, connecting the Southern Overberg with the Garden Route, lays the esteemed town of Swellendam.
As one of the oldest towns in South Africa, Swellendam is steeped in rich history, with buildings such as the Drostdy Building dating back to 1743 when the town was declared a magisterial district. Swellendam has become popularised as the ideal location to retire
or escape from the daily grind of city life and as a result, has some of the finest accommodation in all of South Africa.
Properties in the Swellendam area range from security villages and farmhouses to newly built homes with a modern flair and Cape Vernacular style; the majority of properties are generous in size and complete with spectacular views of the mountains and innate natural beauty that Swellendam is renowned for. The Rotary Park Retirement Village located on Lichtenstein Street is one such example, constructed over 18 years ago by the Rotarians; the development holds approximately 120 sectional title units which all offer splendid mountain views. Facilities inside Rotary Park also include a dining hall and a frail care centre. Aside from being a tranquil and charming town filled with many restaurants and pubs which aid Swellendam's status as a popular stop-off location en route to the Garden Route, it is also a thriving agricultural settlement. With its proximity to the Bontebok National Park and Marloth Nature Reserve which both offer enchanting hiking trails amidst the local wildflowers and fynbos, it is no surprise why properties in the Swellendam area are highly sought after.

Brief History of the Area:

The history of Swellendam begins in 1745 when the Dutch East India Company (DEIC) declared the town as a magisterial district; this act was further cemented by the construction of the Drostdy building which served as the administrative office headquarters of the Landdrost or magistrate at the time. The town was given the
combined name Swellendam after the first South African born Governor of the Cape, Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife, Helena ten Damme.
Swellendam was managed according to the rules set by the DEIC; however, after poor management and many other grievances, the residents of the town led a revolt against the company and declared Swellendam an independent republic in 1795. The rebellion was however short-lived and control of the town was taken back by the Resident Magistrate. Despite its history,
Swellendam became renowned as an important centre of agriculture and trade in the Cape region. Today, the Drostdy Museum complex which includes the Drostdy building has been magnificently preserved after an extensive renovation and expansion period between 1812 and 1825. The Museum and Drostdy Building are a representation of Swellendam's history and contain unique artefacts from the town's past.
