Africa’s Best Kept Secret
Botswana is unrivalled as a country in Africa and offers a unique investment climate. Politically it is rated as the most stable country in Africa and was ranked number one for good governance in Africa, by the World Economic Forum in June 2003. The country also boosts an A2 / Prime 1 international credibility and credit worthiness rating which is the highest rating of any country in Africa. Foreign exchange reserves of around US$ 6 billion are amongst the highest in the developing world and the abolition of all foreign exchange controls in February 1999, means that capital, profits and dividends can be readily repatriated. The current exchange rate, (November 2004), to the Rand is P1 equals R1.34.
The country possesses an abundance of wildlife and natural resources that are as diverse as the Kalahari Desert in the southern and eastern parts of the country, and the delta swamps and river plains of the north. Seventeen percent of available land has been set aside for the maintenance and development of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries by the Government of Botswana, and a further 22% of available land surrounding these areas has been allocated for wildlife management.
After diamond mining and cattle ranching, Botswana relies heavily on eco-tourism as an integral part of its economy, and the country is deeply committed to the conservation of its wildlife heritage.
