Stellenbosch at a glance
It's well known as a university town and South Africa's second oldest town - and it's also one of the country's premier arts, culture, wine and food destinations. A brief history of the area
The settlement of Stellenbosch dates back to 1682 and its restored Cape Dutch architecture is one of the features that makes Stellenbosch so Instagrammable. The town is named in honour of Simon van der Stel, the new governor that arrived in the Cape in 1679. In 1690, grapes were planted in the area by several French Huguenots, and Stellenbosch's legacy as a winemaking region began.
