Soccer City, also known as the FNB Stadium, is home to the South African Football Association and will host eight matches including the opening game, a quarter–final and final games of the 2010 World Cup. It was built as the first international football stadium in South Africa and funded from the football fraternity’s treasury.

The newly–reconstructed stadium has been designed around the theme of a giant African calabash, a ‘melting pot of African cultures’. The upper tier was extended by constructing an encircling roof around the stadium to increase the capacity to 94 700 (with an additional 99 corporate boxes) making it the largest stadium ever built to host a FIFA World Cup.

New floodlights heighten the aesthetic appeal when the stadium is lit at night. A museum and 300–seater restaurant will also be built. Soccer City is located in Johannesburg’s southwest and is only a short distance from Soweto.
