The newly–built stadium, named after Moses Mabhida a former general secretary of the South Africa Communist Party, is situated just 1 km from the city centre. The architecture of the Moses Mabhida Stadium takes inspiration from the South African flag : the two legs of the grand arch on the southern side of the stadium join to form a single footing on the northern side representing the unity of the nation.
The stadium seats 70 000 spectators and has been designed as a versatile venue, complete with a funicular that will carry visitors from the north side of the stadium to a viewing platform at the top of the arch where they can enjoy breathtaking, panoramic views of the city and ocean.
The entire area will feature further sporting arenas and amenities including restaurants, shops and a pedestrian walkway between the stadium complex and the beach. Seven matches of the 2010 World Cup will be played in the stadium, including a semi–final match.
