Ellis Park Stadium is named after JD Ellis, the Johannesburg City councillor who made the area for the initial stadium available and is located at the heart of Johannesburg. The first structure was built in 1928 as a rugby union stadium but it was later demolished and rebuilt in 1982 yet again exclusively for rugby.
Ellis Park Stadium was the venue for the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final – a final that saw South Africa defeat New Zealand during extra time. Nelson Mandela raising the trophy was an iconic scene that brought the sport–loving nation together in celebration and will forever hold a special place in the hearts of all South Africans.
The 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup brought about further renovations to the stadium which can now seat 62 000 fans. The upgraded stadium boasts high–tech media facilities, top–class VIP areas for dignitaries, and a new pitch. Seven matches of the 2010 World Cup will be played in the stadium including a quarter–final match.
